50-foot Whalebelly Box Car Rebuilds

The Santa Fe created more rebuilt boxcars than any other railroad. They reconstructed large numbers of 50-foot wood-framed furniture/auto cars that were originally built in the 1906-1912 years. The original cars had four massive sills and were transformed into all-steel auto and general service cars.

Beginning in 1936, the rebuilding created eleven classes of 50-foot double-door steel cars, the Fe-6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, and 20 for a total of 1,249 cars. These distinctive 50-foot rebuilds played a key role in making the ATSF competitive in the automobile, automobile components, and auto parts hauling from the Midwest to assembly plants in California and Texas. These kits have Dreadnaught ends.

The Resin Car Works Fe-6 through Fe-20 kits were an upgraded release of the popular Sunshine Models kit with a one-piece carbody to ease assembly. Kits included Tichy Train Group ladders and brake hardware, correct Tahoe Model Works #112 USRA 50 ton Andrews truck sideframes, and Microscale decals. Couplers were not included.
